Mirkarimi Hires New Lawyer, Heads Back to Court
San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi is scheduled to return to court today to request the judge modify an order requiring him to stay away from his wife and child. Mirkarimi faces three misdemeanor charges connected to a domestic abuse incident.

Cal State East Bay is naming its interim president, Leroy Morishita, to the permanent job, even as the statewide system sets rules for how much new presidents are paid.

State African-American Homicide Rate 9th in the U.S.
California ranks ninth in the U.S. for homicides among African-Americans. That's according to a study released today by the Violence Policy Center that shows the state's black homicide rate is four times higher than the national average.

Court OKs Adding Juveniles to Sex Offender Registry
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled yesterday that juveniles convicted of sex crimes may be required to register as sex offenders for 25 years.
