Tara Siler: It's a double dose of good news for a University of California, San Francisco neurology professor. The MacArthur Foundation is honoring Dr. Bill Seeley for his research on why certain brain diseases, like dementia, attack specific cells on a microscopic level.
Seeley says the phone call from MacArthur was followed by the arrival of his newborn daughter.
Dr. Bill Seeley: This morning I introduced my newborn daughter to her first sunrise. And my wife and I are on the 15th floor of the UCSF hospital overlooking downtown San Francisco.
And it was about the most beautiful moment of my life.
Siler: Other MacArthur fellows announced today include: poet Kay Ryan of Fairfax, and public radio colleague, Jad Abumrad co-host of the science program "Radiolab."
The award is $500,000.
