Buy American

Download audio (MP3)

A 'buy American' clause in President Obama's stimulus package has set off a heated debate among unions, lawmakers and U.S. trading partners. Some lawmakers critical of the proposal are drawing up legislation to kill the measure, while officials in steel producing states are trying to protect it. We talk with academics about the pros and cons of giving preferences to American vendors.

Host: Michael Krasny

Guests:

  • David Henderson, research fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and editor of the "Concise Encyclopedia of Economics"
  • Harley Shaiken, professor specializing in labor and the global economy at UC Berkeley and author of "Work Transformed: Automation and Labor in the Computer Age"
