Oakland Gang Injunction

Download audio (MP3)

Last week, Oakland's city attorney asked for a court order limiting street gang activity in a defined 100-block radius in the northern part of the city. The move was welcomed by police and some neighborhood groups, but critics, including the ACLU, say such injunctions are ineffective and infringe the rights of individuals to associate freely.

Host: Michael Krasny

Guests:

  • Anthony Toribio, captain with the Oakland Police Department: Area 1, North and West Oakland
  • John Russo, Oakland city attorney
  • Jory Steele, managing attorney with the ACLU of Northern California
  • Maya Dillard-Smith, director of strategic initiatives for Youth UpRising, Oakland
